The Great Japanese Knot Bag Pattern Hunt: Mission Accomplished!

beautiful japanese knot bag ("Azuma Bukuro" or "Kinchaku")
A serene blue Japanese knot bag adorned with delicate white flowers—simple, elegant, and perfect for carrying a little piece of art wherever you go.

Lately, I’ve found myself really drawn to sewing, and it’s been a refreshing shift in how I spend my time. The spark for this new interest came from my struggle to find clothes that truly fit my taste—both in design and fabric. It’s like everything out there just doesn’t quite hit the mark. So, I started thinking: why not make my own or breathe new life into old clothes and fabric bits I already have?

One of the coolest things I stumbled upon was the Japanese knot bag. It’s simple, stylish, and a perfect project for using up leftover fabric pieces. Plus, they make fantastic gifts—practical and personal. I was excited to dive in, imagining all the creative possibilities.

But then came the frustrating part. Suddenly, finding free patterns for these bags became a wild goose chase. It felt like every link I followed led to a dead end or a paywall. One moment, the patterns were everywhere, easy to find and free, and the next, they’d vanished like someone flipped a switch. It was like the internet just swallowed them up.

After what felt like an epic, exhausting search, I finally tracked down a couple of free PDF patterns that are worth sharing. If you’re interested in sewing or upcycling like me, feel free to download these and give it a try. It’s a great way to create something unique while making use of fabric scraps that might otherwise be forgotten.

Happy sewing!
